A place that heals -- but must learn to listen again. I stayed at Ashwini, Gudalur, for 5 days -- drawn by its reputation as a compassionate, community-rooted hospital. I saw noble doctors who gave up metro salaries to serve here. Their commitment is deeply admirable. But I also witnessed a system growing too stiff. Many tribal staff earn just 6,000-8,000 a month. They won't ask for more -- not because they're content, but because they fear losing their place. One tribal maid refused to make me tea, saying, "That's not in the rules." Not unkind -- just trained to care only within limits. I paid 10,000 for my stay, but was asked to leave -- for sleeping in the verandah. No disturbance. No damage. Just a rule. And yet, a few steps outside, a small tea shop vendor made me my perfect cup -- strong, sweet, just right -- simply because I smiled and tipped 50 the day before. Ashwini has done incredible work. It's a beacon in the hills. But rules alone don't make a place sacred -- people do. And sometimes, people need space to be human, not just efficient. I hope Ashwini never loses its heart in its structure. Because the world needs more of what it started as. Edit (9/6/25) : They sent me back 5000. Turns out, hospitality has a return policy. Just don't expect a receipt for dignity.

Gudalur Adivasi Hospital is a 50 bedded hospital that caters to 320 hamlets in and around Gudalur, a valley in the Nilgiris. I had the opportunity to experience firsthand the work they do and the difference it makes to the lives of tribal people in Nilgiris. The hospital is run by a team of dedicated doctors, with senior specialists and junior resident doctors. They also run other services like a Sickle Cell Centre, Disability Centre, Mobile Clinic and a College of Nursing.
It such a amazing place to treatment. All nurse are been like a friends. Dr. Royson, such a superb doctor in surgery. They have a very good environment for the patient's health the only one dislike there its a canteen. There is not a good service. No one respones there. Thank u
Yeah.. as they say it's least expensive. But the waiting period s more compared to other hospitals. U must reach before 8 or 9 n te morning to make sure u come out by 1. Also the system is quiet disturbing since no proper management. People don't wait properly and they go soon into doctor's room even though they have not been asked to come inside.
Clean and patient friendly hospital with a group of dedicated staffs. Preference to tribal population.
I Visited this Hosital in 1998, with Orthopedic surgeon Dr Sreekumar , real service to humanity
